William Pye Water Scupture

Two altars in Salisbury Cathedral

Like the font which I installed in 2008, the two new altars use Purbeck stone and patinated bronze with a reflective surface, this time of black glass instead of water.

The Spire Crossing altar is octagonal with carved texts on each of the facets, taken from the Gospel according to St Matthew. Eight antiphons are engraved around the top edge of the bronze. Also on the facets are icons that make reference to details observable inside and outside the Cathedral.

The Trinity Chapel altar is rectangular and is engraved with an extract of the poem 'The Altar' by George Herbert, who was a contemporary of Shakespeare and local to Salisbury.

The altars were consecrated on 14th January 2024 by the Bishop of Salisbury.
